The setting is feudal Japan, in a time of wars and uncertainty. The Shikon no Tama (Sphere of Four Souls) is a powerful jewel, born from the heart of the powerful priestess Midoriko. While fighting her greatest battle, a crystallized soul was expelled from her heart as she died. Within it, the battle between purity and corruption continues, never ending.
The jewel becomes more powerful if affected by hatred, and will disappear if used for good. Many beings of dark heart seek the jewel for its great powers - for it possesses the ability to make dreams come true. The Shikon no Tama can give life, and cause death. Because of the evil which seeks it, it has left behind it a history of suffering.
InuYasha, an outcast hanyou with a painful past, seeks the jewel to become fully youkai. He almost has a change of heart due to his fondness for the human priestess Kikyou, agreeing to become human instead, but the two are tragically ripped apart. The one responsible is the elusive hanyou Naraku, seeking to further corrupt the jewel and tear the couple apart.
Kagome, a spirited girl from a historical shrine in present-day Japan, is transported to the past and into the midst of the story. She learns that she is the reincarnation of the priestess who once guarded the Shikon no Tama, Inuyasha's very own Kikyou. Early on, she accidentally shatters the jewel into thousands of tiny shards - paving the way for a long, dangerous journey to piece it back together again, to keep it out of the wrong hands. Developing strong bonds with many of the people of feudal-era Japan, she learns of every tragic story which was caused by lust for the jewel - and vows to stop the cycle, and Naraku, once and for all.
A child fox spirit, Shippou, lived happily with his kind and loving father. A pair of renegade youkai, in their quest for more power, killed Shippou's father to collect the fox's Shikon shards. The little fox boy is left powerless to stop them or avenge his father, due to his youth and poor illusionary powers. So he joins with a group of travelers to survive and find purpose...
The young houshi Miroku, who has questionable morals but a caring heart, is cursed to die by his own hand. His grandfather had been tracking Naraku when the shape-shifting villain placed a curse on his right hand - an air hole, the Kazana, which will suck up everything around him into oblivion. The air hole eventually devours its bearer, and passes on the curse through every generation. Unless Naraku is killed, Miroku will be next to die...
In a village of taijiya, a skilled girl Sango lives happily with her father and gentle brother, Kohaku. In one routine battle her life is shattered - under poss session, her younger brother murders all her friends and family, and then collapses in anguish. The siblings are then gunned down with arrows, the villagers thinking them insane. Sango, unable to die, learns that her village was destroyed by a hanyou Inuyasha - all a lie to manipulate her into killing him. The one behind it all was Naraku.
InuYasha, Kagome, Shippou, Sango, and Miroku are slowly brought together to form the InuYasha gumi (group). Amongst all the battles and tragedies, this band of heroes develop and change, uncover new secrets, and face new joys and sadnessess throughout their epic quest. They learn to accept responsibility, cope with loss, understand each other, and fall in love. To follow them is to experience the never ending dream, to make every discovery along with them.
